Barking & Dagenham Schools Programme 2022-23

Modern Slavery Awareness Day
Northbury Primary School

Modern day slavery occurs in cities across the UK, including in Barking & Dagenham.

  • Slavery in a city often takes the form of domestic servitude, exploitation, forced labour (e.g car washes and nail bars) and ‘county lines’.
  • Children and adults can be modern slaves
  • Often individuals live in appalling conditions with many other slaves
  • They may be allowed to leave the house but fear stops them seeking help
  • Many do not know they have been exploited, they do not know they are slaves

Educating the borough’s children is fundamental to ensure they are not vulnerable to being exploited for their labour, sexually or across ‘county lines’ – all forms of modern slavery. To convey knowledge and understanding to them, through the lens of cycling, will ensure that, as our future leaders, they seek to eradicate exploitation and modern slavery in all its forms.

Inspired by a modern slavery awareness day delivered to 630 key stages 1-2 (years 1-6) children at Hunters Hall Primary School, Dagenham, on 8 July 2022, Ride For Freedom is collaborating with the school, led by co-head teacher, Mr Kaitell, to roll out a programme to a cluster of eight primary schools in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham.

Supported by Be First Regeneration, the borough’s housing development arm, Vandome Cycles and several parents associated with Barking & Dagenham Cycling Club, the programme will educate and empower more than 4,000 children in modern slavery awareness and cycling proficiency, during the academic year 2022-23.

  • Key Stages 1-2 will be taught:
    • KS1 – Years 1 & 2 will focus on freedom; key vocabulary will include Freedom, Free, Happy, Rights, Passport, Protection, Potential, Encaged
    • KS2 (lower) – Years 3 & 4 will focus on fairness and fair pay; key vocabulary will include Modern, Slavery, Illegal, Paid, Fair, Pay, Volunteer, Reward, Completed, Work, Treated, Worth, Value, Exactly
    • KS2 (upper) – Years 5 & 6 will focus on exploitation; key vocabulary will include Slavery, Equality, Urban, Exploitation, Living Conditions
  • The programme’s impact will be measured across two metrics:
    • Modern slavery understanding
    • Cycling proficiency
