North East Football Clubs Fundraising Social Cycle

Phil Goodier, Managing Director – Polymers at Biffa Dave Hodgson, ex-professional
footballer and experienced manager

To mark the UN World Humanitarian Day, Gordon Miller, Ride For Freedom Founder & Team Leader and 2x cycling Guinness World Records Title Holder and football legend, Dave Hodgson, who played for Liverpool FC, Sunderland AFC and Middlesbrough FC, invite you to join them to cycle from Newcastle United FC via Sunderland AFC, Hartlepool Utd FC, Middlesbrough FC to Darlington FC.

The significance of World Humanitarian Day is its focus on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, such as climate change. The impacts of climate change are documented as providing conditions for modern slavery and human trafficking to exist.

Ride For Freedom harnesses the universal appeal of cycling to advocate to end modern slavery through raising awareness, forging partnerships and educational engagements, which are three of our key metrics. Remediation is fourth which is delivered through our Freewheel by Ride For Freedom programme that empowers survivors of modern slavery to cycle.

The Ride For FreedomFootball Clubs (North East England) Social Cycle reinforces our ‘show a red card’ campaign that shines a light on human/child trafficking in football which sees 15,000 victims annually in the name of football in Europe alone. They are trafficked from Africa, in the main, by the false promise of trials with professional football clubs that do not exist. Instead, they become enslaved and exploited, victims of modern slavery.
