To “show a red card” to end modern slavery and human trafficking in football, fundraise for Freewheel by Ride For Freedom to empower survivors of modern slavery to cycle, and seed a Freewheel Germany Hub, Gordon Miller led a cycle between the 18 Bundesliga clubs in April/May 2022.
There are almost 50 million women, children and men enslaved on any given day, according to the Global Slavery Index. The Trafficking in Persons (TIP) 2020 Report noted that “within Europe’s soccer industry, it is estimated there are 15,000 human trafficking victims each year”.
Many of the victims are aged under 18, which the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has designated as childhood. They are lured to Europe by the promise of trials with professional football clubs that do not exist. Instead, they become enslaved and exploited, victims of modern slavery.
